Switching from Antiperspirant to Deodorant

I’m going to start this post by saying that everyone is different, and that what works for me might not work for you. I also want to remind you that I have sensitive skin (in case you missed me saying that repeatedly over the course of the past months of blogging).

Over the years, I have tried countless different deodorants in the attempt to stop using antiperspirants. And each time I always ended up switching back to antiperspirants because they just did not seem to work for me. As in, the deodorants seemed to make me smell worse than if I had just skipped a day of wearing antiperspirant.

About a year and a half ago, I decided to try again after stumbling across the Primal Pit Paste website where they explained that your underarms go through a detox process, and during this time, you might be sweatier than usual, and quite often, stinkier than usual. This is completely NORMAL. Continue reading

Wet ‘n Wild, Nyx, and Hourglass Swatchfest

Continuing with the awesome things that I won in recent givaways, here’s the lipstick and lipglosses:

First up is the Wet ‘n Wild lipstick in Bare it All, a very wearable nude / MLBB shade:

Up next the the Butter Gloss from Nyx in Éclair, a super moisturizing lip gloss in a pinky MLBB shade. I don’t normally like lip glosses due to the stickiness, but this one is so buttery!

And the matte liquid lipstick from Hourglass, a gorgeous matte crimson:

And here’s the swatches:

Nyx HD Studio Photogenic Foundation Review

Nyx HD1

Here’s what the Nyx website has to say about the HD Studio Photogenic Foundation:

You don’t have to be on camera to achieve flawless skin! Our peptide infused High Definition Foundation uses light-diffusing technology to enhance the appearance of silky smooth skin. Achieve a picture-perfect look anytime you’re in the spotlight.

Nyx HD2

I’ve never really been a fan of wearing a liquid foundation, most of them make my skin feel like it is smothering. But since I’ve been wearing BB / CC creams all summer, I figured that I would test out a few liquid foundations in the hope that I could find one that my skin would tolerate. I purchased the HD Foundation in Nude, the lightest shade, which is described as porcelain as the next shade up (soft beige) was too yellow in tone for my pinky-peach toned pale skin now that my “tan” has completely faded. *Not that it would be considered to be a tan by most people’s standards, more of a slightly less pale, haha*

As per the packaging, the foundation is described as having the following properties:

  • lightweight
  • buildable coverage
  • mineral enriched
  • formulated without talc and parabens

Nyx HD

Shade-wise, nude is a pretty perfect match for my skin, not a stark, chalky, white and not too pink or yellow in tone. This foundation is available in eight different shades on the website: nude (porcelain), soft beige (light with beige undertone), natural (light-medium with beige undertone), sand beige (medium with beige undertone), medium (medium with golden undertone), natural beige, warm sand (deep with olive undertone), and california tan (deep with slight red undertone). That seems like an awful lot of beige tones to me. Not everyone is beige. Has anyone else tried this product? It seems to me that there should be a far larger shade range.

Nyx HD5

The HD foundation has a creamy liquid texture when applying, and dries down to a smooth, not quite matte, not quite satin, finish. I’ve been applying it with a dampened sponge for a sheer to light coverage which is my preference. It supposedly has buildable coverage, but personally, I really can’t see it as achieving more than medium coverage. For me, it is great for smoothing and evening out my skintone. Normally I can’t wear a liquid foundation for more than a few hours before needing to wash it off because my skin gets so irritated. But with this foundation, my skin feels like it can breathe.

As an added note – I feel that the main reason why a lot of foundations don’t work well on my skin is due to being sensitive to several ingredients, which often include combinations of: parabens, talc, alcohols and perfumes. This product doesn’t contain parabens or talc, but does include alcohol and perfume. So far, my skin has not shown any sensitivity issues, and usually if something triggers my skin, I know within the first couple of hours of use, if not immediately.

Summary and verdict: The Nyx HD Foundation works for me both shade-wise and coverage-wise so I’m happy with my purchase. But, in my opinion, the shade range is limited. I must repeat myself here, not everyone is beige. Those who want or need fuller coverage might not like this foundation.

Oz Naturals Amino Herbal Hydration Mask

I’ve purchased and reviewed three different Oz Naturals products here on the blog already, the Retinol Serum, the Hyaluronic Acid Serum and the Super Youth Eye Gel (here, here and here). Today’s post is a little different as this is my very first product gifted for reviewing purposes. I received an email from Oz Naturals after one of my reviews, and I figured that I would accept a product from them for review since I have already been purchasing products from them that work well with my sensitive skin, so I didn’t feel weird about doing this review since I was planning on purchasing this mask to try anyway.

Oz Mask1

Ok, onto the review. Over the past two weeks, my skin has started freaking out as it normally does with the sudden seasonal change, with an increase in skin dryness – perfect testing conditions.

Oz Mask2

Here’s what it says on the website about the  Oz Naturals Amino Herbal Hydration mask:

Plump up your epidermis with this hydration bomb of a mask. This powerhouse formulation of botanical ingredients deeply nourishes and replenishes tired, aging skin. Moisture-rich ingredients penetrate the skin’s cells, leaving skin hydrated, radiant and more youthful looking.

Botanical solvents drive moisture repair ingredients directly into the heart of your skin cells, with a result of ridding your tired, sallow and dry complexion with this super hydrating mask for the skin. This mask will flood the epidermis with a tsunami of moisture, and your skin will thank you! Gentle enough for daily use. Your skin will soak it up!

The key ingredients  and their main properties are: Silk Protein Amino Acids (builds collagen and elastin), Hyaluronic Acid (hydrates and plumps), Vitamin E (protects and repairs), and Panthenol / Vitamin B5 (humectant and moisturizes).

Oz Mask3

The Amino Herbal Hydration Mask is an opaque white-toned gel type mask, it applies easily to the skin. The mask has a slight cooling tingle effect on my skin, not the scary burning tingle that signals a sensitive skin reaction. It does, however, have a strong herbal scent, but this is the smell of the ingredients, and not an added perfume scent. I actually like the herbal scent, some people might not. I don’t normally like highly scented products on my skin, but the scent dissipates quickly as the mask soaks in the skin and dries. The instructions say to leave it on for 15 to 30 minutes. The first time I only left it on for 10 minutes to test if my sensitive skin would react or not. The second time I left it on for 15 minutes, and since then I’ve been leaving it on for the whole 30 minutes without any problems.

Oz Mask5

To remove the mask you just rinse it off gently as you would with any other facial mask. If I use it in the daytime, I start by cleansing my skin, and I follow up with my hyaluronic acid serum, eye cream, moisturizer, and normal makeup routine. If I use it at night, I use it after cleansing my skin, and follow up with my retinol serum, eye cream and moisturizer.

After testing this facial mask out for more than a week, I can say that my skin is less dry and I had no skin sensitivity issues since I started using this product. I would definitely buy this and incorporate it into my skincare routine.

Disclosure: I received this product in exchange for an honest review.

Nyx Above & Beyond Full Coverage Concealer Review

Nyx Above1

Sorry for the lateness of today’s review. This is the last item from my mini-haul, the Above & Beyond Full Coverage Concealer from Nyx. Yes, another concealer. I’m forever searching for THE ONE. (Reviews from the mini haul are here and here)

Nyx above2

Here’a the blurb from the Nyx website:

Our Full Coverage Concealer hides the villains of dark circles and blemishes with a vengeance. Available with an arsenal of shades and an advanced formula that provides long-lasting full coverage.

Nyx above3

Does it live up to its claims? It is pretty damn good at covering blemishes / skin discolouration, and it even works pretty well with dark circles.

Nyx above4

The coverage is full, but it can be sheered out if you don’t want full on coverage.

Nyx above5

I picked out shade CJ02 Fair which is a perfect match for my skintone. I had to swatch it heavily so it would show up on my skin for the photo, haha!

Milani Colour Statement Lipstick Review – Cabaret Blend

Lawton's Mini Haul

I’ve never actually seen Milani Cosmetics here in Montreal. Ever. So when I happened to be in Nova Scotia last week, I decided to hit up the Milani display at the pharmacy near my parents house. Mini-haul post here  and review of the Nyx palette here.

I wanted to find a deep, rich, vampy shade for fall, so I picked out a Colour Statement Lipstick in shade #40, Cabaret Blend. As well, I wanted to replace the Milani lipstick in Sangria that I bought as it had continued to go off and was full-on rancid playdough scented, so it had to be pitched into the trash (review is here)

Thankfully this lipstick had the signature fruit punch / watermelon type scent that these lipsticks are supposed to have.  Cabaret Blend is described as a deep red-berry shade. The colour is so gorgeous and dramatic.

The texture is nice and the lipstick is hydrating. It was super long wearing. It only came off when I finally wiped it off. I didn’t notice any bleeding or feathering, but I did use a coordinating lipliner from Urban Decay  (Venom).

I’m in love with this shade. I’m so happy that I decided to pick this one up to replace the rancid smelling lipstick.
