I was super excited to receive a box from Demeter Fragrance Library to introduce their Foolproof Blending Kits. The box contained: a Foolproof Blending Duo in Clean Skin and Sunshine, a Foolproof Blending Trio kit in Vanilla Notes (Hawaiian Vanilla, Angel Food, and Gingerbread), a USB key, and a travel sample keychain in the Laundromat scent.
Here’s the lowdown on Demeter scent blending from the Demeter website:
RULE # 1
There are no rules.
Simply select your favorite scents. Combine. Experiment. Blend.BLENDING TIPS
- Try combining one from the TOP, MIDDLE and BOTTOM note sections on the
Demeter Blending Pyramid- Experiment with different fragrance combinations and proportions
Even the order that you apply the fragrances to the skin will affect the
final fragrance- Try combining multiple fragrances from the same row
- Try combining multiple fruits or multiple flowers
- Spray each fragrance on separate paper strips. Combine strips and smell in
various sequences until you find the scent you want to use on your skin.- TIP: Use multiple strips of a single fragrance to play with different concentrations
Inside the Foolproof Blending Duo Box, there are two fragrances, Sunshine and Clean Skin, an Empty Bottle to mix your custom scent, several droppers, and a funnel to make your blending process foolproof.
With my notebook by my side, I began by testing out the Foolproof Blending Duo, first spraying each one separately on my skin and letting them dry down to smell how each scent worked with my body chemistry. Descriptions in italics are taken from the Demeter website, and my reactions are listed after each scent description.
Sunshine – Cotton, warmed by the sun, was the smell that best represented the idea of Sunshine. This is a truly perfect summer scent, it worked great with my body chemistry.
Clean Skin – A blend of orange, lemon, white rose, bergamot peach and vanilla, make for the perfect shower-fresh scent. I LOVE LOVE LOVED this one. Lightly floral and fresh.
The Foolproof Blending Trio comes with three different Vanilla scents: Hawaiian Vanilla, Angel Food and Gingerbread, as well as several blending test strips.
Next, I repeated the same process with the Foolproof Blending Trio, taking notes on how each scent reacted with my body chemistry.
Hawaiian Vanilla – Cultivated on the Hamakua Coast on Big Island of Hawaii this unique orchid grows in the wealthiest soil on earth. Hawaiian heat, sweet rains and mild breezes transform Hawaiian Vanilla blossoms into the richest most aromatic vanilla beans in the world. Demeter’s Hawaiian Vanilla is rich in the aromatic scent of the vanilla bean. This vanilla scent beautiful, it goes quite floral on me, and not too “foody”.
Angel Food –The critical ingredients reflected in Demeter’s Angel Food are egg whites, sugar, vanilla and coconut. The coconut is our own special touch, from a generations old Pennsylvania recipe, passed down through the family of our founding perfumer. This one is very foody, very cake-like and sweet on my skin.
Gingerbread – Demeter’s Gingerbread is a rich, spicy ginger scent, extremely warm and sexy. At first sniff, it wasn’t very gingery at all, but once it dried down, I loved the spicy undertones and the vanilla helped bring it out.
Next I came up with a list of blend combinations that I thought would work, and tested them on the blending strips, on pieces of paper (when I ran out of blending strips), as well as on my skin. I really loved both Clean Skin and Sunshine, so I knew that my base scent would start from that point. I tested the following blends for my base before I started tweaking the scent.
- clean skin + sunshine – a summery blend, light, bright and floral.
- clean skin + hawaiian vanilla – nice at first, then became too sweet on my skin
- clean skin + angel food – the coconut note is too much for me, and this turns too sweet on my skin. (I have an aversion to coconut scents)
- clean skin + gingerbread – a wintery blend, spicy and floral
- sunshine + hawaiian vanilla – a summery blend, light, bright and floral, a little too sweet on my skin
- sunshine + angel food – the coconut note is too much for me, still have an aversion to coconut scents.
I decided that for the colder months, that the spicy floral scent would work best for me, so I proceeded to mix Clean Skin with Gingerbread, starting with a 1:1 ratio, and gradually increasing the concentrations until I felt that the scent had the right balance of floral to spicy. I let the scent sit overnight, and tested it on my skin again before tweaking the blend further, and added a touch of Hawaiian Vanilla to add a bit more depth to my custom blended scent. The approximate percentage for my custom blend is Clean Skin 50% Gingerbread 40% and Hawaiian Vanilla 10% for a spicy floral scent with a hint of sweetness that is just so me.
Thanks again Demeter Fragrance Library and Canadian Beauty Bloggers network for this opportunity! #CBBFOOLPROOFBLEND

How fun is this! I’ve always intended to place an order with Demeter but their fragrance library is actually a little bit overwhelming. But I love the idea of a custom scent and your scent combo sounds divine!

I had so much fun with this one – I took my time, made notes. I really want to pick up a few single scents like rose, and Amber and make myself my dream rose scent!

Oh my gosh, a rose amber scent would be so pretty! And some of those vanilla scents might be nice with a rose scent as well!

Clean Skin sounds like a great everyday scent! I’d wear that all by itself – no blending required! 😀

It is really lovely on its own (I saved approximately half a bottle to wear on its own)

Totally random comment for you – I just found out that they make blundstones in freaking burgundy – very close to the shade of my cherry docs from back in the old days!!!

Yes! I’ve seen those. They also offer ones that have a contrasting / colourful elastic portion – quite eye catching! I’m fine with my plain black ones. 😛 Are you thinking of getting the burgundy ones?

Yeah, I’d love to get the burgundy ones, maybe for my birthday in April – even though my plain black ones are still going strong after more than two years!

Oh yes that sounds perfect. Rose perfumes are very personal and I usually find the ones in store too sweet or fake. This would be ideal 🙂
