Generation Beauty Mascaras – Essence, Pur, Tarte

Hello, hello!

Today I’m reviewing the mascaras from my Generation Beauty haul. I have three that I have been testing for the past two weeks – the Essence Forbidden Volume Mascara, the Pür Volume Vixen Mascara, and the Tarte Tarteist

Gen Beauty Mascaras

As I’ve said before in a previous mascara review, I have seven requirements for a mascara, so each one will be judged according to the following points:

1. waterproof

2. smudge-proof

3. non-flaking / non-clumping

4. DARK black in colour (not blackish, not brown black, and definitely not grey black)

5. volumizing

6. holds a curl

7. non-irritating to my sensitive eyes

Ok, first up is the Forbidden Volume Mascara from Essence Cosmetics *Purchased at the Essence booth at Generation Beauty* Here’ what it says on the website:

so good, it should be forbidden! dramatic volume without clumping. the conic fiber brush of the forbidden volume mascara creates incredibly voluminous lashes – with just one application.

My experience: First off, this mascara is not waterproof, but I only experienced a little bit of smudging by the end of the day which is pretty good for a non-waterproof mascara. I did not have any problem with flaking, and only a tiny amount of clumping (which was easily fixed with an eyelash comb). The colour was a nice dark black, and it did not irritate my eyes. I did not find it to super volumizing, but it did add length nicely. The biggest disappointment for me was that it only held a curl for about half an hour before making my lashes droop. I would rate this mascara  4 out of 7.

Up next is the Volume Vixen Mascara from Pür Minerals. *Gift Bag Swag from Generation Beauty* Here’s what it says on the website:

There’s volume, and then there’s false lash volume. Powered by Keratin, PÜR’s latest mascara innovation brings you false lash volume, separation, strength and length straight from the tube! This powerhouse mascara infuses lashes with nourishing hydration for a visibly thicker, fuller effect from root to tip while high-performance, ultra-light polymers deliver maximum build without clumping or weighing you down. And with our advanced application wand with reservoirs, getting flawless full volume lashes is easier than ever in one application. No double dipping required! It’s a triple threat and a must-have for all makeup bags. The only trouble you’ll have is convincing people they’re real.

My Experience: This mascara is not waterproof either, but it did not smudge on me when I was wearing it. I did find that it had some clumping while applying, as the formula seems a little thicker than I’m used to. This a beautifully dark black mascara, and it added some volume, but not a false lash effect. This mascara did not irritate my eyes, but sadly did not hold a curl for more than three hours. I would rate this mascara 4.5 out of 7.

And last, but not least, is the Tarteist Lash Paint Mascara from Tarte. *Freebie from the Tarte booth at Generation Beauty* Here’s what it says on the website:

A jet black lash paint mascara that increases lash volume by 2700% instantly with a patented soft bristle brush. Vegan, ophthalmologist and dermatologist tested.

My Experience: This mascara is also not a waterproof formulation, but it was definitely smudgeproof, and did not flake or clump. The tiny brush came in handy for making sure that every single lash was coated. This mascara was the darkest of three mascaras tested. It was also the most volumizing, but their claim of increasing lash volume by 2700% is not true for me. I would not even call it super volumizing. This mascara also held a curl the longest out of the three, and did not irritate my sensitive eyes. I would rate this mascara as a 5.75 out of 7.

    1. I think all of the mascaras might be great if you are a non-waterproof mascara lover with naturally curled lashes – but I prefer waterproof and my lashes are stick straight, so I need one that can hold a curl. 🙂

  1. I have t been impressed with Tarte mascaras. Only Essence one I’ve tried is the Lash Princess False Lash Effect, which I LOVE.

  3. Weird that the Tarte mascara would claim to be volumizing. You can just tell from the bristle design it’s not going to volumize much. Odd. Too bad you didn’t find your HG in the bunch!

  4. I defiently felt the same about the essence mascara. I bought one two days ago and have to say I’m not exactly in love with it

      1. Ohhh I’ve heard that, that ones really good! I really do love essence though, the quality is usually pretty good and they’re not extremely expensive, so I expected it to be a good mascara when I bought it
