Holy Grail or Holy Fail? Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara Review

Hello, hello!

I know that the Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara is a Holy Grail product for a lot of people, so I thought that I would give it a second chance after my first impressions Ipsy Glam Bag unboxing in November.

Using my Seven Requirements For Loving a Mascara rating system, let’s take a closer look at how this mascara performed for me. Because my lashes are long and stick straight, I always curl my lashes before applying mascara. Here’s my Holy Grail requirements:

1. waterproof

2. smudge-proof

3. non-flaking / non-clumping

4. must be DARK black (not blackish, not brown black, and definitely not grey black)

5. volumizing

6. must hold a curl

7. non-irritating to my sensitive eyes

Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara

I used this mascara several times over the past month, and found that it only smudged a little bit if my eyes watered when out in the cold. It is a deep dark black which I love, and did give my lashes volume (not the crazy percentage claimed though, haha). I did not experience any flaking, which was nice. BUT I found that two coats of mascara made my lashes clumpy and SO heavy, which meant that the curl did not hold up all day.

I’m just not in love with this mascara, sorry Too Faced! I would like to try some of the other mascaras to see if any of them will work for me.

  4. Agreed, I have this one and use it but it just doesn’t do anything amazing for me! I have better/cheaper mascaras in my collection that I love. To each their own – I love the art work!

  5. I still haven’t tried this. There’s so much hype about it but I know I’ll be disappointed due to the price. I tend to be more critical and expect more when things are expensive. 😛

  6. I was impressed when I first tried this but the more I use it, the more I am wondering what the hype is! It’s great in that it gives volume etc but like you I find 2 coats and it starts to go wrong….I can’t believe they recommend 3!!! I’ll keep using mine but not sure I would re-purcahse. Estee Lauder’s Sumptuous Lash is equally as good and without the clumping! Great post xx

  8. I’ve seen both sides of reviews. Some people really love it others don’t. I do think it comes down to absolute preference. But then again I’m not sure since I’ve never tried it. I almost don’t want to buy it and be disappointed

  9. I love to pair this mascara with the Tarte Lights Camera Lashes mascara. 1 coat of each is my perfect combo! As much I love the volume this gives me lashes but it flakes on me if I apply too much. I haven’t had it get clumpy on me yet. Its crazy how different products can be for everyone.

  12. I have yet to try this because there are so many mixed reviews. I also have too many mascaras as it is. I want to get some of what I have before I get anything new.

    And who comes up with those crazy numbers? 1944%?! Riiiight. 😂

  14. A lot of people swear by this product but for me? No… didn’t work. I returned it. I had a problem with clumping and it was all over under my eye multiple times so I wound up giving up on it. I’ve had wonderful experience with the new Dior Show formula and also Le Metier de Beaute. The mascara stays put, lashes stay curled… those are my faves.
